boo hiss boo and hiss
car has been this way for a few days now. I've been lent my friend's suby to fix a misalligned clutch fork, no deadline and I've been sick like dog all week. anyhoo, got all teh bolts and nuts removed between engine and trans aaaaaand..... nothin'. the thing just won't budge. Cannot seem to get them apart.

DEM DOWEL PINS.
I've had luck rocking the engine/trans apart, but once or twice I've had to carefully place a chisel between the two and..... yes... AIR HAMMER them apart. It works. Just be careful. Take your time. Try the spot right by where the starter sits, there seems to be a lot more material there, it's where the transmission's ID number is.

I know this is a little too late, but why didnt you yank the tranny out from underneath (though I know those CV dowels can be a PITA too). I have yanked that tranny in less than 2 hours on the ground

yeah, agreed, its GOTTA be the dowels on either side. I saw a crack appear on the driver side, as described right by the starter, but I couldn't get it to expand around to the other side. Double triple checked I removed all the bolts/nuts were removed and checked against my spare engine. I've tried lifting and wiggling and various angles, and even (as seen in pic) dropped it back on its wheels to see if a completely level playing field would help in case it being on jackstands was putting it at an odd angle.
Tonight I shall try lifting on the trans to try and manipulate angles some more.

only reason I didn't pull tranny vs pulling engine was because all the processes online suggest moving the engine for a clutch change.

You may already be on there but check out AWDpirates.net. It's a local Subie board and someone may be able to lend an hand.

hmm well, I have never done it by book or suggestion, just got r done. How long to this point on the engine pull minus the dowel issue?

Well there is only 4 bolts on most of the EJ motors, after the starter is removed there's nothing else that should be holding them together. Unless it was an automatic but it's not, so no torque converter bolts to worry about.
It's them dowels. Work on that crack. It'll split with enough hammering/swearing/beer.

did you consult a manual? Service manuals, the other manual of the auto enthusiast world.

its encouraging to hear you share my thoughts. I shall press on with prying methods then. thinking mentally about what I pulled...
2 bolts either side for exhaust headers
2 bolts passenger side, 1 nut
2 bolts on starter motor, additional bolt and 1 nut.

I did, I have a PDF of the service manual, it says do what I've done (removing bolts etc) and then the next step seems to suggest that things will just happily slip apart, perhaps with the involvement of fairies and a gentle trilling of harp music.

The only way I got my 265k mile EJ251 detached from my tranny was by the liberal application of wood chisels and gentle prying. It helps I didn't need to reuse my clutch though, so I didn't worry about killing the flywheel bearing.

Phase I EJs have four bolts... Phase 2 have 8, four bolts and four studs.

I'm hoping to reuse the clutch, flywheel etc. Also, not my car so I shall proceed cautiously. But the work being done is because the clutch fork is way out of alignment or broken, wondering if misalignment there might be part of my problem.

Yeah... The FSM says "split engine". Here, copy paste:
"21) Remove engine from vehicle.
(1) Slightly raise engine.
(2) Raise transmission with garage jack.
(3) Move engine horizontally until mainshaft is withdrawn from clutch cover.
(4) Slowly move engine away from engine compartment. "

I thought I had a dowel pin stuck when removing the range rover engine from my parts sacrifice. Nope, missed a bolt.

What is the issue with the fork? Binding?

I can, even though Kinja is being Kinja. Yeah, looks like the ball broke, or the fork cracked. I'm betting on the fork crack. I've seen it happen to others before....

yeah, I've not ordered any replacement parts yet as I want to be sure of what I need, but I've expecting to replace the fork at least, and while I'm in there throw in a new throwout bearing beacsue they are cheap and why not, and hopefully not need to do a new clutch and/or flywheel, unless they have been damaged.
